"Any idea when you're interviewing the Haim sisters?" a message arrives. "My request was to ask if I can be their newest bandmate."

There's just one problem: The sender also wants to be Haim's additional sibling. And we're far from alone. Several high-profile supporters have openly begged for the role.

It's clear an irresistible appeal is at play. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana began their career playing gigs at local delicatessens with their parents. Today, they are repeated Grammy Award contenders.

Similar to the best ensembles, they're a inseparable trio. Their visuals frequently depict them striding in harmony down the roads of Los Angeles. In concert, they jam with such unfettered happiness you find yourself thinking, "I'd love to be part of that, too."

"The numerous instances on tour that audience members told us and said, 'Watching you live, I got a drum kit'," states Alana, the youngest of the Haim siblings. "It is the biggest compliment. That's an award in itself. We've done our job if we can motivate people to start a band."

"And thus anyone are welcome to be the fourth Haim sister."

Grammy Nod

The group are connecting from their homes, where they're taking a pause after an major tour in promoting their latest album, I Quit.

They're presently reeling from the news it's been shortlisted for best rock album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the first female band ever in the running for the prize.

"I tune into the lists every year, so it sort of feels like The Truman Show when your name is called," notes Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Am I hearing this correctly or am I dreaming'?"

The significance of the honor resonates with the sisters.

"We deliberately set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a major milestone," continues Alana. "However we're just thankful for the pioneers that came before us."

Emotional Upheaval and Laughter

The project was born from a phase of personal change. All three sisters ended up single, and the music captures that unique in-between place where you're relieved to be free, but not yet ready to move on.

The words track departures and farewells. The sisters want love, but not the relationships they've got. You can hear them determining in the moment who they aspire to be.

"That's a perfect description, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is like a slogan. You have to consciously practice blocking the criticism and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."

Refinement of Music

That developed resilience required a new sound – more raw and immediate than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who co-produced the album, that was founded on the drums.

"Drums are such a nuanced thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she states.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our memoir," jokes Alana. "I've said it, our albums cannot begin until we find the ideal drum sound."

Experiences and Collective Laughter

The band's candor fueled the album's rollout, where the sisters disclosed some of their personal tales.

A former partner ended things with Este over a medical consideration. Alana recalled a story of flying to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"During these breakups, you just feel like there's only darkness," says Alana. "Therefore to be able to find humor in those stories and hear others tell you even crazier stories, it's therapeutic."

An Assured Path

One can easily sense a change in the band. Today, Haim are more assured of their position in the music world.

They're major draws, with hit albums and an global audience.

However the band will always be their top commitment.

"Me and my siblings have been playing music since I was little," says Alana. "It's like nothing else that we were supposed to do. And I'm really fortunate we've made it and we're still kicking."
