Conservative reactions to the limited release of documents related to the Jeffrey Epstein case have been mixed, with some supporters of the previous administration pointing out the prominent presence of Bill Clinton and additional Democrats in images, while others expressed frustration over how heavy censorship cast Donald Trump and Republicans in a negative manner.
Justice Department Defends Censorship with Strong Rhetoric
Justice Department representatives defended the heavily censored sections with fervent hyperbole. “At no point in U.S. the nation's history has a President or the Department of Justice been this open with the public about such a sensitive legal matter,” stated a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who issued a six-page letter describing the censorship procedure.
Questions Raised by Redactions
While Trump's name and likeness are visible in portions of the materials, the extensive redactions raise serious concerns about what may be hidden behind them. A number of conservative lawmakers swiftly called for greater transparency.
“The public are raging and walking away,” wrote Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a social media post, GOP Kentucky Thomas Massie asserted the censorship violate the law, and implied that a subsequent Congress may attempt to remove the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Regrettably, this document release grossly fails to comply with both the spirit and the letter of the act,” he added.
Some Rightwing Figures Rally In Support of the Release
But, a segment of rightwing commentators and former President allies swung firmly behind the administration.
The disclosed materials—from a DOJ run by key Trump associate Pam Bondi—contains hundreds of pages that are completely censored, and many of the men shown in pictures have their identities obscured.
Yet a few do not, featuring high-profile individuals like Bill Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The presence of Clinton, in particular, allowed certain rightwing voices to launch the offensive.
“It’s pretty ironic how the Democrats wrongly accused President Trump of being a sex offender, only for the administration's Justice Department to release documents that show Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a convicted sex offender,” stated right-wing activist Laura Loomer.
“Recently released Epstein Files reveal Bill Clinton shirtless in a jacuzzi with a female that is other than his spouse Hillary Clinton,” posted attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There is only 1 explanation Epstein would photograph a Commander-in-Chief with a girl in a jacuzzi: Leverage.”
Former President Spokesperson Releases Statement
Bill Clinton has repeatedly said he knew of no illegal activity by Epstein and has not been accused to have engaged in any wrongdoing. “The White House hasn’t been concealing these files for an extended period only to release them at the last minute on a weekend to protect Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s spokesperson Angel Ureña said in a statement.
“The release is about protecting officials from what comes next, or from information they’ll try and conceal permanently. So they can publicize as many low-quality decades-old photos as they desire, but it is not about Bill Clinton. Not previously, not ever be,” the statement added.
Overall Rightwing Comment Remains Subdued
Nonetheless, broader comment on the political right was comparatively muted following the release, particularly when compared with the loud demands for transparency that preceded the congressional vote to pass a law mandating the documents' publication.
Loomer, who not long ago accepted press credentials at the Defense Department, had been among the most vocal proponents for a complete disclosure. In February, she criticized the Justice Department broadly and Bondi specifically after a set of rightwing influencers were provided hard-copy binders of materials that contained no previously unseen information.
