Space Traveler Reveals Emotional Distress After Deluge of Harassment Post-Spaceflight
A Vietnamese-American astronaut has publicly detailed her battle with depression after enduring a “tsunami of harassment” in the wake of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.
Amanda Nguyen – known as a researcher and activist – was part of the brief journey to space in April, which also featured high-profile passengers.
The mission was heavily criticized by some, who challenged its value and ecological impact.
Reflecting on the situation, Ms. Nguyen, who was celebrated as the pioneer for her community, stated the negative reaction buried her dreams under an “avalanche of misogyny”.
“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” she recounted in a social media post, describing a check-in call from a fellow crew member in the days following the journey.
She characterized the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.
“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she revealed. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”
Eclipsed by Backlash
Ms. Nguyen, who has dedicated her work to gynecological science and operated research during the flight, said every professional achievement – including her studies and astronaut training to the historic significance of her background – was overshadowed under the tide of gendered attacks.
She is most acclaimed for her tireless campaigning fighting for justice for survivors of assault.
Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was deferred after an attack during her college days, leading to a long campaign for accountability.
A Path to Recovery
Now, eight months after achieving her goal, she has stated the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she acknowledged the supporters whose support pulled her through. “You all saved me,” she affirmed.
She concluded that even with the backlash, important benefits had emerged from the mission, including spotlight on her women's health research and platforms for her activism.

The self-operating spacecraft launched from its launch site in April, carrying the historic roster on a 11-minute journey that exceeded the internationally recognized boundary of outer space.
