Tetris Couldn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category May Address This Issue

Each time a significant honors show nears, one notices an outcry for the addition additional classifications to honor unsung work and fill the passions of followers dedicated to specific genres.

Another commentator previously argued for a horror game category. It would be amazing. The same goes for board games, this being someone's personal cause. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front just as with other single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification backing this proposal remains most pressing and important of all. Here's the proposal: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and typically spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. But it is an essential concession in the world of video games, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify a single creative category.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.

Existing Game Classification System

The major gaming awards presently include classifications covering Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these six categories effectively encompass many game types, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.

This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Think about these outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles of one title, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.

The Representation Problem

Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games released every year lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive Indie races.

  • One classic puzzle game got overlooked in any category during that awards season
  • Another imaginative release was excluded that year
  • A beloved organization game got ignored in 2021
  • Limited numbers of logic titles scraped into small studio or handheld classifications

Value of Brain-Teasers

Commonly they're modest productions, but the art of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among most popular titles worldwide continuing this trend for over a decade.

The famous puzzle experience rivals well-known building titles for the title of best-selling game of all time; it also contends as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.

And to reiterate, these are games without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators operate at the challenging frontier of video game design, developing some of the purest expressions of the video game form. Just like cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay generations.
