On his inauguration day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani committed to “reimagine” New York City, promising “a different age” and an bold beginning to his term.

A Groundbreaking Figure

The 34-year-old figure, who just a year ago remained a relatively obscure state assemblyman, has become the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He additionally marked a milestone by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Qur'an.

“A moment like this comes rarely and even more uncommon is it that the public whose hold the levers of change,” Mamdani stated.

Rejecting advice to lower expectations, the mayor declared: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to redefine is that of limited ambitions. Beginning today we will lead expansively and audaciously.”

Governing with Socialist Ideals

Mamdani openly embraced his socialist politics. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will govern as one. I will not abandon my convictions for fear of being called radical,” he proclaimed to rapturous applause.

The ceremony was a two-part event, beginning with a midnight oath-taking in a disused subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the front steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's ascent as a victory over the status quo.

A Sweeping Blueprint

Mamdani now begins one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a plan including:

• Universal childcare
• No-cost bus transit
• A cap on rents for about 1 million households
• A pilot of municipally-operated grocery stores

The projected $10 billion cost of these programs may prove difficult to finance. Mamdani has pledged to raise taxes on the wealthiest New Yorkers and big business. However, as a city under the authority of the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Navigating External Headwinds

The new mayor also faces concern from some members of the Jewish community concerned about his past criticisms regarding Israel. Sensitivities were revealed during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over offensive past comments.

Mamdani has attempted to address these tensions by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, avoiding the appearance of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “communist” and threatened withholding federal funding. Despite this, a prior encounter between the two was described as surprisingly productive.

The Fundamental Tests of Governing

Ultimately, New York mayors are judged on their success in providing city upkeep: trash collection, curbing the rodent problem, repairing potholes, and making sure smooth subway operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his administration's anti-crime efforts, pointing to record low numbers of homicides and gun violence in 2025, with 301 homicides reported.

As his term starts, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the stately mayoral residence. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual piece of advice about a reputed resident spirit in the home, which reportedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his address with a direct declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
